Manningtree

Lots of wonderful places to discover

The town has a relaxed, welcoming feel with a traditional high street lined with independent shops, cafés, and pubs. It’s a great place to enjoy a slow wander, pick up a coffee, or relax by the river and watch the boats drift along the Stour estuary.

Manningtree has a rich and sometimes unusual history. It became a busy market town in medieval times and still retains many attractive Georgian and timber-framed buildings. It is also known for its connections to the 17th-century “witch trials” and the infamous Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General, whose story is part of the area’s local heritage.

Manningtree may be one of England’s smallest towns with a great selection of independent shops, but it also has a surprisingly lively food scene with cosy pubs, cafés and independent restaurants packed into its charming historic streets.

You can enjoy wood-fired Italian dishes at Lucca, relaxed pub dining and local ales at The Crown Pub and Hotel, or authentic Indian cuisine at Mogul Restaurant Manningtree and Nirala Tandoori.

For something more casual, The Red Lion is a much-loved traditional pub where visitors can even bring or order takeaway food to enjoy on the premises along with a pint of your favourite ale or wine .

Cafés such as Hobson’s,  RIO’s, Penelope’s and Tea At The Quay Mistley are ideal for brunch, coffee, and homemade cakes.
Manningtree’s mix of independent eateries, relaxed atmosphere and waterside setting makes it a lovely place for a day out

For those who enjoy the outdoors, the surrounding area offers beautiful walking routes into Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The riverside paths and nearby countryside provide excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, birdwatching, and photography.

Nearby Mistley is just a short walk or drive away and is well worth combining with a visit, particularly for its historic waterfront and the striking Mistley Towers.
